1. SET WINDOWS UPDATE TO RUN AUTOMATICALLY
A computer that is not updating is more likely to run slow or be exploited for vulnerabilities. Random reboots, blue screens, viruses, spyware etc.
2. INSTALL ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE THAT WORKS IN REAL-TIME
In most cases, free versions of anti-virus software will do the basics, which in some cases may be enough. Basic virus scans, quarantines and deletes, are what most people want and need. Some premium paid versions of 3rd party anti-virus software have the one feature I like, real-time protection. But why spend your hard earned money on anti-virus security software if you don’t need to. Windows 10 Security offers many different many different security features needed to keep your personal computer safe from Viruses. The best part, it’s free with every Windows PC.
3. PROTECT YOUR EQUIPMENT AGAINST POWER SURGES
Power surges are something computer owners should take seriously. I recommend unplugging all computers and electronic devices. Anything you value that is plugged into a wall outlet should be unplugged during any rain storms, lightning or thunder. This includes telephone wires and Ethernet cables. Lighting travels through those wires too.
4. BACKUP YOUR DATA
Windows comes with a backup solution that works very well. Most versions of Windows will even create a complete image of your system. But if you want to venture outside Windows you could try any of these cloud services. Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and iCloud. These cloud based services work. They are easy to figure out and will help you backup your data safely.
5. KNOW THE MOUSE
Right click for a menu, left click to select or open. Right click in different programs or locations on your screen and you will get a different menu.
6. DON’T PULL THE PLUG
Never pull the power cord from a live powered on computer. (costly damage may occur to your computer, especially if it’s old)
7. PROTECT YOURSELF
Never log into more than 1 website at a time, especially if it’s financially related. Make a habit of logging out of your sessions/accounts before you walk about from your computer. Never have multiple sessions active in the same browser.
When you least expect it is when you need to know your usernames and passwords. If you like to use a pen and paper, great, just keep it in one place. If you like to create folders on your desktop and create new text files inside it, perfect.
9. FAST INTERNET
Get the fastest internet speed you can afford. More and more we are streaming video from YouTube, gaming, downloading large files, photos, Facebook etc. For all this to work quick and smoothly you need a fast connection.
10. BUY A HEAVY DUTY UPS
Plug your modem, wireless router, computers and electronic devices into your UPS. (Uninterruptible Power Supply) The bigger and more expensive the UPS, the longer you will be able to play when the power goes out.
