Top 10 Computer Tips for 2023
There are probably thousands of computer tips that could be dug up. In this article, I listed my Top 10 Computer Tips for 2023. If there’s a computer tip you would like to see listed here, post it in the comments section below and I will add it with your name and a link back to your website.
1. Keep your computer and software up to date
Computers that are not updating are more likely to run slow or be more susceptible to malware infections. Things like random reboots, blue screen of death BSOD, viruses, malware, spyware etc.
2. Use a strong, unique password for each of your accounts
Using the same password for multiple accounts increases your risk of getting hacked. Use a password manager to help you create and store strong, unique passwords.
3. Install anti-virus software that works in real-time
In most cases, free anti-virus software will do the basics, and for most users should be enough. Virus scans, quarantines and deletes, are what most people need. Some of the premium paid versions of other 3rd party anti-virus programs have the one recommended feature, real-time , We use Malwarebytes Premium.
Note: The Windows operating system ships with Windows Security. This built in software has many of the security features needed to keep your personal computer safe from Malware and Viruses. The best part, it’s free with every Windows computer. You just have to know how to set it up.
4. Protect your equipment against power surges
The ultimate way to protect your computer is to unplug it. What most computer owners do is purchase an Uninterruptible Power Source (ups). Anything you value that is plugged into a wall outlet should either be unplugged or plugged into a well known popular UPS. During a rain storm where there’s lightning and thunder, unplug or make sure your devices are plugged into a UPS that will protect them.
5. Backup your data
The Windows Operating System ships with a backup solution called Windows File History. This program works great with Internal and External Hard Drives. Another way to backup your files is through cloud services like Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox and Apple iCloud. All of these cloud based services are an excellent alternatives to local backups.
6. Keep your computer clean and organized
Regularly deleting unnecessary files, defragmenting your hard drive, and keeping your desktop organized can help your computer run more efficiently. Uninstall unnecessary programs that you no longer use, consider uninstalling them to free up space and improve system performance.
7. Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication
In addition to using strong passwords, consider enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to enter a code sent to your phone or email in addition to your password when logging in.
8. Don’t under estimate fast Internet
Get the fastest internet speed you can afford. More and more we are streaming video from YouTube, gaming, downloading large files, photos, Facebook etc. For all this to work quick and smoothly you need a fast connection.
9. Use caution when sharing personal information online
Think before you share personal information online, such as your name, address, and phone number. Only share this information with trusted sources.
10. Use a secure Internet connection
Use a secure, encrypted connection when accessing or transferring sensitive information online. Avoid using public WiFi networks whenever possible, as they may be less secure. My recommendation, use a premium paid for VPN.
Bonus Tip – (Privacy)
Are you serious about your privacy? Then consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN is a service that encrypts your internet connection and hides your IP address. A VPN makes it difficult for others to track your online activity or identify your location. I recommend NOT using a free VPN, only use a paid VPN. I use the paid or premium version of Nord VPN. Free VPNs slow down your Internet speed and do not offer the same amount of privacy as a paid VPN. Don’t believe me? Use a free VPN to download copyrighted material and watch what happens. Read the article I wrote on why Free VPNs are dangerous.
